A site for inshore fly fishermen and tyers.
Rey, I would like to attend the casting class. Also could you or Mark please let Dr. Ivan Rodriquez know when the next fly tying session will be, he has expressed interest in attending.

I would welcome the opportunity to work with you regarding casting improvement.
My availablity is somewhat limited due to work responsibilities, never-the-less, I
will do my best to attend. I am also glad to pay for your services.
Next week I will be back in town 3/15 through 3/19.
Look forward to the class.

Larry Haines demonstrated the tying of a great little crab pattern. It was slightly above a beginner's skill level, but doable. Everyone at the session did a great job because from the finished flies, I couldn't see one that wouldn't catch fish, except for Larry's which was too perfect to put in the water.
This man wows us every time he demonstrates a pattern. Here's what I remember of the steps for this fly.
While others thought of Sunday as a good time to spend on the back porch turning fajitas and hot dogs, sixteen members of the Laguna Madre Fly Tiers were out on the waters of the Laguna Madre whipping their rods in hopes of casting to a huge red. Some of our fly tiers proved that they could catch fish. I left my notes in the office, so I'm going to try to recall them.
First place went to Brian Robinson with a total catch of 59 1/2 inches. I may have given him a half inch,…Continue

I used a size 2 hook with large gold bead chain eyes and it casts very well, nice and easy. A size 4 wide gap hook would work well.

The next Laguna Madre Fly Tiers Tournament will be held on Sunday March 6th. You can fish the waters of the Lower Laguna Madre beginning a daybreak, but must be back to the meeting place by 2:00 p.m. We have usually met at Chili Willie's. As soon as I make arrangements, I'll let everyone know.
The entry fee is $10. We discussed making the entry fee a donation to the club, so I would like to hear from you if this is what we want to do. Jim Carey is trying to get us a good price on…Continue
At the last fly tying session, we had great interest in having a fishing tournament in early March. The tournament would be for all members of the Laguna Madre Fly Tiers. More than likely the tournament would be held on Sunday, March 6 or in early April. We need to hear if March is too soon or April is too late.
The tournament registration will be $10 payable prior to the tournament. More details on that later. The fishers should start no earlier than 6 a.m. and should meet…Continue
The date is set. Tuesday, February 15th at 6:30 p.m. I'll try to line up the fly tiers for the session. Jim Carey has offered to tie a fly and I would really like for Marcus to tie the "Crabby Patty"; however his education is getting in the way of his passion. I know the feeling. If any one has any suggestions for flies, let me know.
Mark has arranged for us to meet at the Posada del Colorado Lodge in Arroyo City.
Let me know if you can attend by…Continue

We met last night at The Shop and tied some awesome looking flies. Larry Haines, owner of Port Isabel's premier fly shop, taught us how to tie the Haines Pilchard. Again I don't mean to sound religious, but how many times in your life do you have the opportunity to learn to tie a fly where the master teaches you his personal creation.
I know what Larry means by applying too much buck-tail. My pilchard imitation looked more like an untrimmed, plump bass bug which will likely float in…Continue

It seems that I am out of luck. I've had many opportunities to catch my first red on a fly, but for some reason I can't seem to connect. This morning every fly I casted was considered an atomic bomb. As soon as the fly hit, the fish took off to Iran or Afghanistan. The afternoon didn't appear to be any better. The wind picked up and I managed to draw blood on my cheek.
The only good thing was that I did manage to catch a couple of trout on day three of January. I heard some…Continue
