F-C Sand Shrimp, Tuesday, May 12, 2015

If Einstein was a fly fisherman, he would have hailed the F-C Sand Shrimp because of its simplicity. Its so simple that we may be able to tie two or three of these flies during our fly tying session. Craft fur, estaz, and dumbbell eyes make this a deadly redfish, drum, and sheepshead fly.

Join us Tuesday at  6:30 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room. Rey Ramirez will be the instructor.

Thursday May 7, 2015

The regular 1st Thursday Social and Fly Tying event will be held at the Shop at 6:30. Unsure what we will tie but perhaps Larry can be persuaded to tie the articulated croaker. In the One Fly Tournament this was the hot fly as both Larry and Jim Carey caught fish on it.

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

This classic pattern is a favorite for tarpon fishers all over the world. Tied on a sturdy saltwater hook the black and red pattern has been an effective pattern.

The session will be held at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room on Tuesday, April 14th, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

Come and join us.

Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - The Intruder

This pattern is probably more well-suited to cold-water steelhead fisheries, but Jack Keller uses these flies for many of our inshore and near-shore species. If you have never tied a tube pattern, here's the day to learn. This is also a pattern that we're going to fish pretty soon under the lights.

The session will be held at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room on Tuesday, March 10th at 6:30 p.m. Charlie will bring some tube fly equipment. This should be new experience for most. So we hope you can make it.

Hollow Fly

Jack Keller will be tying the Hollow Fly at the Bass Pro Shop Meeting Room at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11th. Join us for this very unique pattern.

Accuracy Casting Class

Placing a fly at the right spot is referred to as presentation. Even though there are many aspects of a presentation what is essential is the ability of a caster to properly align the rod and line to the intended target. On Saturday, October 25, 2014 we will go through these essentials and learn to make accurate casts at short, medium, and long distances.

The class will be held from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the home of Dr. Rey Ramirez on 31940 Cactus Road, San Benito, Texas. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair, water, cap, and sunglasses. Please refer to the weather and dress appropriately.

Contact Rey by texting 956-639-3426 or emailing him at Attendees should have an understanding of basic casting skills. If in doubt, let Rey know and he'll go over what those are. If you have been to the sessions below, your ready to go.

Fly Tying Session "The Chewy Shrimp" - October 14, 2014

We have a change in the line up for this month. Jack Keller convinced his friend, Terry Eddelman to tie his "Chewy Shrimp". He'll be bringing the materials and examples. Apparently its a multi-stage process and requires some drying time. Hope to see all members of the RGVFTC there. If you would like to join our club, come over, we'll have forms or you can print them off from this site and bring them to the meeting. Non-members will be charged a nominal fee for the fly.

Double Haul Class - September 27, 2014

The double haul adds energy by bending the rod during the casting stroke which transfers the energy to shooting the fly line to a target. Doing it right takes practice and the double haul workshop helps the fly caster to understand the principles of a properly applied double haul. The timing with appropriate application of power and specific ideas on how to translate the hand, arm, and body movements to produce the double haul are discussed, demonstrated, and practiced.

Join us to get the goods on the double haul. The workshop presented by Rey Ramirez will be held at 31940 Cactus Road San Benito, Texas from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The class is free for RGV Fly Tiers Club members.

LMFFA 2014 Richard McGinis Fly Fishing Tournament

Tying the HI-TI Streamer - Wednesday, January 15, 2014

The Rio Grande Valley Fly Tiers Club will be meeting on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room for it's first fly tying session of the year.

Either Jack Keller or Charlie Villarreal or both may tie this fly. They demonstrated it at my house the other day and it certainly seems worth learning.

I'm currently recuperating from a hip replacement and won't be able to attend. This will give me sometime to finish the Rio Grande Valley Fly Tyers Club website and the fly tying schedule for the year.

More information to come.

Hello to all the LMFFA members.

We hope everyone had a summer full of catching fish on the fly and a full year of LMFFA activities.  It's that time of the year again, cooler weather, holiday festivities and our annual banquet.

The LMFFA banquet committee and board of directors have been busy trying to make this years upcoming banquet better than ever.  We have decided to have the event sometime early February 2014 at the Harlingen Country Club.  Food, cash bar, raffle, a program speaker and not to forget about the awards for the year round tournament are on the agenda.  Prizes for the winners will be provided by the one and only Larry Haines.

We are sending this letter to ask our members for any kind of raffle items they are willing to donate.  Some of the items we have gathered so far is a weekend trip to a fishing cabin up by the land cut and also a fly box full of flys tied by some of our local guides.  Anything we can get will be much appreciated.  Let's make this event one to remember!

Please call or email one of us for donations or questions.
Thank you.

There will be no cost for this session. Basically, every fly tied remains with the fly tier, unless they would like to give it away.

2013 Upcoming Events

We want to have a great time this next year. We've been talking about planning several events to focus on fly fishing.

Not-So-Hot Fly Casters Tournament - This event has been well received when held in the past. A few dates are being considered. The tournament will use the same rules set by the Federation of Fly Fishers.

One Fly Tournament - There may be new rules for the next One Fly Tournament. We have had a couple and participants have complained about the previous rules. The suggestion has been to select one fly that we tie at a fly tying event and then fish that fly at the tournament. Previously a fly fisher only had one fly to use. But, the new rule may allow us to fish several flies of the same style. What this means is that we tie several flies, like a clouser, and only fish it. Sounds interesting and we'll have to talk about this some more.

Laguna Madre Fly Fishers Annual Banquet - Some time in February we're planning to have our annual banquet. The date will be set soon, but so far the Harlingen Country Club has been considered as the event site. More to come in the next few days.

Arroyo Colorado Kayaking Trip - About a week ago, I took a group down the Arroyo Colorado. We didn't fish so I'm looking for a few good men and women to fly fish a two mile section. There is a good launching and pickup point. This trip will be held on an early morning launch and should end a little after lunch. More to come.

I wanted to let everyone know where we were in planning for the new year. Stay tuned for more information.

"Flies for Flatties", December 11, 2012

Flounder populations are down, but the winter time seems to increase the probability of hooking on to a good number of these flat fish. We have this date open before the end of the year.

You can keep five fish anytime except during November when you can only keep two. There are probably few fish that rival the flavor of the southern flounder.

What's the opinion of those that want to go after this fish? Let me know whether this is a good species to target and whether you would be interested in attending this special session.

Sweet Flies for the Surf at Bass Pro Shop -

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Frenzied skipjack, seatrout, tarpon, and crevalle jacks will be the target for the Laguna Madre Flyfishers surf fishing trip on Saturday, November 3rd. In prepration, the members agreed to focus their fly tying on flies that would stand up to the more toothy denisons of the gulf shore, but would be easy to cast.

We had originally Larry Haines tying his version of Bob Popovic's surf candy. I'm going to give it a try and hope that it's as good as Larry's in being able to attract fish with a sweet tooth. Because the session will be attended by several new to the sport, the session will begin with a review fly tying basics.

There will be a new venue for this fly tying session. We'll be meeting at Bass Pro Shop in Harlingen. I'll give you more information on the actual meeting place, but I've been told that it can hold plenty of tiers. Meeting time is set for 6:30 p.m.

It's important that you let me know whether you are coming by e-mail ( or text at (956-639-3426). Let me know. The cost for the session is $2.50 for both flies.

Hope that you can join us also on the surf fishing trip. You'll need to be a member of the Laguna Madre Fly Fishing Association to attend.

Crabby Redfish Patterns - Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Tough fishing conditions turn into crabby situations. Everyone knows that members of the croaker or drum family love crabs. Casting what could be a heavy fly could be a curse unless the fly tyer uses materials and techniques that lessen the load. This is the intent of our next session because redfish love these crustaceans.

Art Roel and Santiago Gonzalez have both come forward and accepted to produce crab patterns that is sure to entice the wariest redfish. Thanks go out to both of them.

We'll be meeting at "The Shop" in Port Isabel, Texas.  Thanks Larry for hosting.

For now, let me know whether you are coming by e-mail ( or text at (956-639-3426). Let me know. Although, we had a great session with plenty showing up for the session it would be really good for those planning to attend to contact me.

Weighted and Weightless Streamers for Top and Bottom Fish - Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Fly fishers love to tie streamer flies that are able to cover different levels of the water column. At the next fly tying session we'll focus on baitfish patterns that are fished where fish lurk.  Jack Keller will tie the pattern he posted (DSC_0007). I'm tying a streamer using a new weighting system, FISH SKULL. See the posted photograph "Fish Skull Streamers".

The next fly tying session will be held at a new venue, my boat garage. The address is 31940 Cactus Road in San Benito, Texas. Turn north on 803 from Highway 100, then turn right on Cactus Road. The house is rather hidden.  More clear directions and map will follow.

Bunnies and Cockroaches - Tuesday, September 11, 2012

The session couldn't have gone better. We had a great turnout. Some of the tyers called last minute and we were able to accommodate them. We hope to have our next fly tying session in two to three weeks, so stay posted.

What do bunnies and cockroaches have in common? Well? They are classic tarpon flies. Developed over 50 years ago, they are some of the most successful tarpon patterns ever created.

The next fly tying session will feature these patterns. Larry Haines will tie a bunny pattern and I'll follow with the cockroach. It's been a long time since we've met, but the instructions are still the same. Give me a call or text to let me know you're coming at (956) 639-3426 or send an e-mail to

The class offered on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, starts at 6:30 pm at The Shop in Port Isabel. The fly shop is located two blocks before the causeway. Look for the gorilla statue on the right. If you have questions give me a call.

Cost for the session is $2.50.

Fly Tying Session - Tuesday, April 10, 2012

The date and location are confirmed for our next fly tying session. We'll be meeting on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at La Posada del Colorado.

Clint Welding has agreed to do a spoonfly for our next session. This is one of those patterns that is so easy to use and almost always get strikes to the point that it's not even fair. I saw the fly that Clint showed me at the last session. It was very well done and his techniques results in a very duable fly. This session is worth attending. I'm going to tie the No name fly in a chartreuse and pink pattern. I'll post pictures of the fish that this fish took this weekend.

Fly Tying Session - Tuesday, March 20, 2012

The next fly tying session has been set for Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at The Shop in Port Isabel beginning at 6:30 p.m. The session was delayed a week to avoid the spring break crowd headed to and from South Padre Island.

Larry has agreed to tie one of his fly patterns. Initially, the plan was for me to tie a pattern from one of the recent fly fishing magazines. We may be doing even better. The "Cocktail Shrimp" was one of the flies appearing in the Winter 2011 issue of Fly Tyer magazine. Well that fly is a pattern recognized belonging to our own Captain Skipper Ray.

Enjoy the time on the water and hook on to a big one.

Cost for the fly tying session is $2.50. You must let me know if you will be attending so that we can organize the session. You can text or call me at (956-639-3426) or email me at (

Rio Grande Valley Fly Tyers Club is Chartered IFFF Club

Posted on October 29, 2013 at 8:57am 0 Comments

We have received word from the IFFF that all of our paperwork has been approved and we now have the status of an IFFF Chartered Club. It took allot of work and I want to personally thank the officers for helping to get everything in order to make the charter status happen.

We have still allot of work to do in the coming year and I want to encourage all members of RGVFTC to lend their support and a helping hand as we move forward from this point on.

Thank you and congratulations…

Report from Clint Welding

I was able to do something I have wanted to do for several years, fly fish Pyramid Lake. It is located about 25 miles from Reno on an Indian reservation and is over 5000' in elevation making the sun intense. The lake is 35 miles long and 3 to 5 miles wide and 300' deep. It is feed by the Truckee River which connects it to Lake Tahoe. It has no outlet just evaporation. The lake is home to the largest Cutthroat Trout on the planet. They are the Lahontan strain and grow to over 20… Continue

Difference Between Fly Fishing and Fly Casting Lessons

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:39am 8 Comments

Dear Friends.

Here's a few notes about the Basic and Intermediate Fly Fishing courses offered as advanced angler education classes through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department angler education volunteers. The TPWD classes introduce wouldbe anglers to fly fishing. The basic course introduces students to the sport of fly fishing and isn't intended to prepare them to actually catch fish with the fly rod. The intermediate course is for someone that has developed a basic fly fishing… Continue

Some Thoughts About How to Fish for Flounder

Posted on November 25, 2012 at 8:58am 4 Comments

A few years ago, I stumbled upon an article in Texas Outdoor Magazine that covered fly fishing for flounder. The flies used were primarily clouser-style flies and the technique was a slow retrieve with a fast one-foot strip every so often. With that information I headed to the Arroyo Colorado on a misty Thursday morning and tried dredging the bottom with a then new 8wt Lamiglas rod and scientific angler intermediate line. The result that morning was four keeper flounder. Of course, I was…

Lessons Learned on the Surf

When we left the convention center I really had no idea what we would find which is the way I feel everytime I hit the beach. There is so much impredictability. You never know what the water conditions will be. Murky water, high winds, no birds, and you name it can make it difficult to find fish. This trip was an exception. The water was clear, the winds were tolerable, the birds were acting as beacons, and the fish were there. Our problem was connecting. Why? What did we learn?

LMFT One Fly Tournament

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 7:32am 0 Comments

We held our 3rd Annual One Fly Tournament yesterday. Twelve of our members braved the 46 degree morning to try and catch the longest total length of two fish (Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, and Skipjack). Honors went to Marcus Montalvo (53 1/8"), Mike Montalvo (52"), and Bill Shire (51"). Right behind was Jim Carey (50"). Abraham Benavidez caught a 52" limit, but didn't make the weigh in. He said he would show up again next time and would watch the clock.

I think fun was had by all and…

2012 LMFT One Fly Tournament Information

This spring the Laguna Madre Fly Tyers will hold their third One Fly Tournament on Sunday, March 4, 2012. The venue, of course, are the inshore fishing grounds of the Lower Laguna Madre from South Bay to the landcut north of Port Mansfield.

Terminal Tackle:

A maximum of three flies from a single fly pattern (e.g., clouser, deceiver, seaducer). I’m trying to decide whether it will be the “No Name Fly” or the “Whisper…
