F-C Sand Shrimp, Tuesday, May 12, 2015
If Einstein was a fly fisherman, he would have hailed the F-C Sand Shrimp because of its simplicity. Its so simple that we may be able to tie two or three of these flies during our fly tying session. Craft fur, estaz, and dumbbell eyes make this a deadly redfish, drum, and sheepshead fly.
Join us Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room. Rey Ramirez will be the instructor.
Thursday May 7, 2015
The regular 1st Thursday Social and Fly Tying event will be held at the Shop at 6:30. Unsure what we will tie but perhaps Larry can be persuaded to tie the articulated croaker. In the One Fly Tournament this was the hot fly as both Larry and Jim Carey caught fish on it.

Tuesday, April 14, 2015
This classic pattern is a favorite for tarpon fishers all over the world. Tied on a sturdy saltwater hook the black and red pattern has been an effective pattern.
The session will be held at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room on Tuesday, April 14th, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.
Come and join us.
Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - The Intruder
This pattern is probably more well-suited to cold-water steelhead fisheries, but Jack Keller uses these flies for many of our inshore and near-shore species. If you have never tied a tube pattern, here's the day to learn. This is also a pattern that we're going to fish pretty soon under the lights.
The session will be held at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room on Tuesday, March 10th at 6:30 p.m. Charlie will bring some tube fly equipment. This should be new experience for most. So we hope you can make it.

Hollow Fly
Jack Keller will be tying the Hollow Fly at the Bass Pro Shop Meeting Room at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11th. Join us for this very unique pattern.
Accuracy Casting Class
Placing a fly at the right spot is referred to as presentation. Even though there are many aspects of a presentation what is essential is the ability of a caster to properly align the rod and line to the intended target. On Saturday, October 25, 2014 we will go through these essentials and learn to make accurate casts at short, medium, and long distances.
The class will be held from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the home of Dr. Rey Ramirez on 31940 Cactus Road, San Benito, Texas. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair, water, cap, and sunglasses. Please refer to the weather and dress appropriately.
Contact Rey by texting 956-639-3426 or emailing him at reyram49@gmail.com. Attendees should have an understanding of basic casting skills. If in doubt, let Rey know and he'll go over what those are. If you have been to the sessions below, your ready to go.
Fly Tying Session "The Chewy Shrimp" - October 14, 2014
We have a change in the line up for this month. Jack Keller convinced his friend, Terry Eddelman to tie his "Chewy Shrimp". He'll be bringing the materials and examples. Apparently its a multi-stage process and requires some drying time. Hope to see all members of the RGVFTC there. If you would like to join our club, come over, we'll have forms or you can print them off from this site and bring them to the meeting. Non-members will be charged a nominal fee for the fly.
Double Haul Class - September 27, 2014
The double haul adds energy by bending the rod during the casting stroke which transfers the energy to shooting the fly line to a target. Doing it right takes practice and the double haul workshop helps the fly caster to understand the principles of a properly applied double haul. The timing with appropriate application of power and specific ideas on how to translate the hand, arm, and body movements to produce the double haul are discussed, demonstrated, and practiced.
Join us to get the goods on the double haul. The workshop presented by Rey Ramirez will be held at 31940 Cactus Road San Benito, Texas from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The class is free for RGV Fly Tiers Club members.
LMFFA 2014 Richard McGinis Fly Fishing Tournament

RGVFTC members may attend free. A small fee ($10) will get you in the workshop if you're not an IFFF or RGVFTC member.

Free-for-All Fly Tying Event - Bass Pro Shop - Tuesday, February 26, 2013
This is a free-for-all. At this session everyone can bring a fly pattern that they want to introduce to the group. It would be great if at least five individuals would volunteer to demonstrate a fly. After seeing a fly being tied those that aren't tying can rotate to another fly pattern.
Those fly tiers interested should contact me to let me know that you plan to tie. If you are planning to attend, let me know.
There will be no cost for this session. Basically, every fly tied remains with the fly tier, unless they would like to give it away.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!
Everyone loves shrimp and so do fish. Everyone is will enjoy this next session and will be totally pleased with fishing with these shrimp patterns. Larry Haines will guide us through the tying of a grass shrimp pattern. This pattern produces a pattern that can be effective with all fish species. Later Charlie Villarreal will test all of our skills by not only tying, but by twisting EP fiber into a braded pattern that is effective and long-lasting.
We'll be meeting at The Shop in Port Isabel on Tuesday February 5th at 6:30 p.m. If you planning to attend remember to text me at (956-639-3426) or send me an e-mail at reyram49@gmail.com. The cost for the session is $2.50.

2013 Upcoming Events
We want to have a great time this next year. We've been talking about planning several events to focus on fly fishing.
Not-So-Hot Fly Casters Tournament - This event has been well received when held in the past. A few dates are being considered. The tournament will use the same rules set by the Federation of Fly Fishers.
One Fly Tournament - There may be new rules for the next One Fly Tournament. We have had a couple and participants have complained about the previous rules. The suggestion has been to select one fly that we tie at a fly tying event and then fish that fly at the tournament. Previously a fly fisher only had one fly to use. But, the new rule may allow us to fish several flies of the same style. What this means is that we tie several flies, like a clouser, and only fish it. Sounds interesting and we'll have to talk about this some more.
Laguna Madre Fly Fishers Annual Banquet - Some time in February we're planning to have our annual banquet. The date will be set soon, but so far the Harlingen Country Club has been considered as the event site. More to come in the next few days.
Arroyo Colorado Kayaking Trip - About a week ago, I took a group down the Arroyo Colorado. We didn't fish so I'm looking for a few good men and women to fly fish a two mile section. There is a good launching and pickup point. This trip will be held on an early morning launch and should end a little after lunch. More to come.
I wanted to let everyone know where we were in planning for the new year. Stay tuned for more information.
"Flies for Flatties", December 11, 2012
Flounder populations are down, but the winter time seems to increase the probability of hooking on to a good number of these flat fish. We have this date open before the end of the year.
You can keep five fish anytime except during November when you can only keep two. There are probably few fish that rival the flavor of the southern flounder.
What's the opinion of those that want to go after this fish? Let me know whether this is a good species to target and whether you would be interested in attending this special session.

Fly Tying at The Shop, November 13, 2012
Larry Haines has offered his place for fly tying this month. We missed Larry at the Bass Pro Shop session, but he's promised to tie his version of the Surf Candy. Unfortunately, Charlie will not be able to tie his Braided Shrimp. We'll get him on at another time to do this fly.
The session will be held at The Shop in Port Isabel, Texas. For those not familiar with "The Shop" it's about two blocks from the causeway on the right if your headed east on Hwy 100. We're scheduled to meet at 6:30 pm.
You must let me know if you will be attending so that we can organize the session. You can text or call me at (956-639-3426) or email me at (reyram49@gmail.com).

The group will meet at the South Padre Island Convention Center at 7:30 a.m. and head out from there. Four wheel drive vehicles are a must. If you have one and can form a group, let us know. Post on this site if you can provide transportation.

Fly Tying Session - Tuesday, March 20, 2012 The next fly tying session has been set for Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at The Shop in Port Isabel beginning at 6:30 p.m. The session was delayed a week to avoid the spring break crowd headed to and from South Padre Island. Larry has agreed to tie one of his fly patterns. Initially, the plan was for me to tie a pattern from one of the recent fly fishing magazines. We may be doing even better. The "Cocktail Shrimp" was one of the flies appearing in the Winter 2011 issue of Fly Tyer magazine. Well that fly is a pattern recognized belonging to our own Captain Skipper Ray. Enjoy the time on the water and hook on to a big one. Cost for the fly tying session is $2.50. You must let me know if you will be attending so that we can organize the session.
