UPCOMING EVENTS

Fly Tying Session set for Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Mark Becerra has confirmed that we can meet at La Posada del Colorado for our next fly tying session.  Bill Shire will tie his GA.2 fly and if someone doesn't come up to the plate, I"m tying the "Straw Boss". It's a freshwater minnow that shows promise in the salt.

You must let me know if you will be attending so that we can organize the session. You can text or call me at (956-639-3426) or email me at (reyram49@gmail.com).

Attendees:

Clint Welding (+guest)

Fly Tying Session at The Shop - Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Unfortunately, Bill Shire will be out of town and won't be able to tie his GA.2 fly. However, Clint Welding is stepping up to the plate. The second fly will either be from Larry or myself. My fly would be a lefty's deceiver. As I've said before, many of you have tied it, but I think it would a good choice for beginning tier's to learn this classic fly.

Larry has agreed to hold the session at his shop in Port Isabel. For those not familiar with "The Shop" it's about two blocks from the causeway on the left if your headed east (duh!) on Hwy 100. We're scheduled to meet at 6:30 pm.

You must let me know if you will be attending so that we can organize the session. You can text or call me at (956-639-3426) or email me at (reyram49@gmail.com).

Our last session had an excellent attendance and I expect the same. We'll bring in extra chairs and tables, but we need time to organize. I'm bringing our vises, but if you have a vice, please bring it, bobbins, scissors, and other fly tying tools you think you'll need. We'll provide the fly materials.

The cost of the session is $2.50 so that we can continue to purchase materials and tools for our sessions. We collected nearly $25 dollars and with the money purchased a vice for $22.00. We have money still in the kitty.

Sometime during the session, I would like to get some thoughts on the upcoming "One Fly Tournament". So be thinking about it.

If you think of something that I didn't say, please email, text, or call.

Laguna Madre Fly Tyers' One Fly Tournament Date Set

This spring the Laguna Madre Fly Tyers will hold their third One Fly Tournament on Sunday, March 4, 2012. The venue, of course, is the inshore fishing grounds of the Lower Laguna Madre from South Bay to the landcut north of Port Mansfield.

Terminal Tackle:

A maximum of three flies from a single fly pattern (e.g., clouser, deceiver, seaducer). I’m trying to decide whether it will be the “No Name Fly” or the “Whisper Shrimp”. You can decide on your pattern, but you have to stick to it.

Registration:

We’ll be having a registration in late February. At that time you’ll give your name and the fly pattern that you’ll be using. Can’t change your mind after that so consider conditions that may affect your fly pattern choice like the wind, tide, grassiness, water color, etc.

Pot:

$10 per angler

Posting Location and Time:

Chili Willie’s (pending) at 2:30 p.m.

Photographic Evidence:

Photograph of fish in front of a clearly readable measuring tape was submitted

Winner’s ranked on the combined length of two fish (redfish, ladyfish or seatrout). No other species can be submitted.

Prizes:

The Pot will be distributed based on placement. 25% of the pot goes back to the group. Of course, the more participants the merrier the winners.

    First Place - 30%

    Second Place - 25%

    Third Place - 20%

Name the "No Name Fly"

We have a quorum to tie the "No Name Fly". The fly tying session is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.

Mark will confirm the meeting location at the Posada del Colorado in Arroyo City.

I will be tying the "No Name Fly" and possibly the "Ghost Whisper Shrimp". We want to talk about future patterns to tie and begin planning the next LMFT Tournament, "The One Fly".

If your interested and haven't responded send me a text (956-639-3426), e-mail (reyram49@gmail.comPllll). The charge for the session is $2.50 which goes to the club's material inventory. Hope to see you there.

Fly Tying Session - March 8th

Larry is tying some of his crab flies. The crab above came from the stomach contents of the redfish I caught at the LMFT Tourney. I used the beach bug to catch this one.

Larry's flies will surely work on the sand now that the weather seems to be warming up, the red action on the sand will be warming up also. Tying a few crab flies for our boxes is not a bad idea.

I am going to demonstrate the use of light cured acrylic to create a spoonfly. Some of you may want to get messy and try one of these awesome fly patterns. I'm sure to use one of my favorite spoons this weekends' tourney.

We'll meet at Larry's Shop in Port Isabel on Tuesday, March 8th at 6:30 p.m.

If you want to be at the next session let me know through e-mail or text (639-3426). If your name is not listed in a couple of days then send me an e-mail at reyram49@gmail.com or text me at 956-639-3426.

A Good Day in Louisiana

Posted by texasflycaster on January 17, 2012 at 4:50pm 2 Comments

I know we Texans are proud of our redfish, but dang, Louisiana has it going on. I was lucky enough to have a client take me, on his dime, to fish with him in NOLA. It was a quick trip from here in DFW - flying in late Sunday, fishing all day yesterday, and flying back to Dallas on the redeye this morning. He's a ad agency owner, and photographer, so this was a photo heavy trip. Full report will appear on my site first, but I did manage to snag a fancy fly from Uptown Anglers that Rey Ramirez…

Hope you get a chance to come down. I don't know about the snook prospectus for you, but one of our members has to have an answer.

"Down South Jukin' Looking' for a Piece of Mind"

Couldn't resist a little Lynyrd Skynyrd quote to open this one! How are things on the southern tip of Texas? I haven't heard from Captain Mark Becerra in a while, and I have some guys here looking to do some snookin' whenever the time is right. If we can zero in on something like south Texas snook (has a ring to it), I am going to pitch the producer on doing a new Kayak Fishing Journal episode down there. Any other ideas are welcome as well. Don't know that anyone has even seen the first…See More
